- The purpose of this blog is to document graffiti in the West Bank, Palestine. I spent three weeks in May, 2010 traveling around the West Bank photographing graffiti. Although it was brief, this trip was one of the richest and most educational experiences of my life, and I want it to be shared. The photos deserve some contextualization, but for the most part they speak for themselves. The graffiti describes people's suffering, it pokes fun, it accuses, it is brutally honest and it is sarcastic. The graffiti speaks of an undying hope for peace, and the graffiti speaks of deeply rooted anger and hate. It is raw, and it is meticulous. The graffiti is art and it is defacement. It is local and it is foreign. The images displayed on this blog are puzzling and inspiring. Graffiti gets inside of your head and rearranges your thoughts.
These images remind me of the art of Ernest Pignon Ernest, a French artist who does similar work. Interestingly, he has even carried out a project in/on Palestine around the figure of Mahmoud Darwich:
